If you're focused on pragmatic change, the starting point is to find an edge. And that is typically a new market, a new technology, a new business model that has the potential to scale very rapidly, and ultimately actually to become the core of the business. So you start with an edge; rather than trying to convince the core to give you resources on the edge, the primary focus is looking out beyond your institution and say: 'Who could I mobilize to try to engage and drive some change on this edge?' So you're reaching out and getting leverage from beyond the institution, and that becomes a way to avoid the bottleneck of the core, that will resist giving you resources.
And then there's the opportunity to really learn faster as you get out on these edges.
